Know More Types of Acne
Acne, like any other skin disease, comes in different types. It ranges from mild to severe cases. It is essential to know the different types of acne so that you will have an idea on how to treat your acne depending on how mild or severe the case may be. While those affected by mild cases of acne could treat their acne woes all by themselves, those affected by a severe case of acne must see a skin professional or dermatologist for safe and effective treatment.
The most common form is the Acne Vulgaris. Under this type, you can still find two sub-categories: the mild to moderate and the severe type. The mild to moderate type of acne vulgaris is characterized by popular acne spots such as the whiteheads, blackheads, papules, and pustules. These types of acne could be treated by simply washing the face and using facial soap which is fit to treat mild form of acne.
Under the severe form of acne vulgaris, you can find nodules, and cysts. Nodules are hard lumps occurring underneath the surface of the skin and consist of acne spots which are bigger than blackheads or papules. This type of acne could last for several months and is quite painful. Cyst acne, on the other hand, is similar to nodule except that it is more pus-filled and is usually as big as 5mm in diameter or more. Scarring is very common with this type of acne and is quite painful as well. Dermatologist’s help is highly recommendable for these types of acne vulgaris.
Another type of acne is the Acne Rosacea. This form of acne usually occurs among people over the age of 30, mostly among women. It is often characterized by red rashes on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin, and occasional appearance of pimples and skin blemishes. If left untreated, acne rosacea could cause swelling of the nose and the growth of excess tissue, which is a condition called rhinophyma. If you think you are suffering from acne rosacea, it is advisable to consult a skin professional or dermatologist so it could be treated right away to avoid further infection and damages to your skin.
Now let’s go to the severe cases. These types of acne might rarely occur but they pose a serious treat to the skin of the person suffering from it. Under this type you can find Acne Conglobata. This severe form of acne commonly affects men, usually between ages 18 to 30. It is characterized by numerous large lesions which are usually interconnected, alongside blackheads outbreak. Acne conglobata occurs on the face, chest, back, buttocks, upper arms, and even thighs. One way to treat this acne form is by using isotretinoin, though it is sometimes resistant to treatment.
Acne Fulminans is another form of severe acne which is characterized by the sudden appearance of acne conglobata and accompanied by fever and aching joints. This type of acne does not respond well to antibiotics, however, you can try to use Isoretinoin and oral steroids.
Another rare but severe acne condition is the Gram-Negative Folliculitis. It is a bacterial infection which is characterized by pustules and cysts. It is said to be a complication caused by a long term treatment of acne vulgaris using antibiotics. Unlike acne conglobata and fulminans, gram-negative folliculitis responds well with isotretinoin treatment.
